Virginia Class A Contractors' License
To do business in the state of Virginia, a contractor must obtain a Class A, Class B, or Class C contractor's license in the appropriate category or categories. Licensing is regulated by the Board for Contractors of the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation of the Commonwealth of Virginia. A firm must meet certain requirements and qualify for a specialty classification in which to work. M&M Professional Landscaping, Inc., and M&M Lawn Care, Inc. hold a Class A Contractors license with a "LSC" specialty classification; M&M Custom Fence Co. has a Class A Contractors license with a "HIC", "FIC", and "CIC" specialty classification.
To qualify in their specialty classifications the companies must meet the following requirements:
- Must have at least one full-time qualified employee with at least five years of experience in the specialty service.
- A designated employee or member of management has passed the Advanced Section of the Board for Contractors licensing examination, a four-hour written examination covering a variety of subjects relating to the contracting business.
- During the past five years the firm has had no past due debts, defaults, disciplinary actions or judgments outstanding.
- No member of management has been convicted of a criminal act.
- The firm has a net worth or equity of $45,000 or more.
- The company may enter into contracts of $120,000 or more, and sell $750,000 or more in specialty services in a one year time period.
- The company must comply with all federal, state and local rules and regulations that apply to the landscape services business.
Specialty Classifications and what they mean:
LSC Specialty classification - Qualified as a Landscape Services Contractor
HIC Classification - Qualified as a Home Improvement Contractor
FIC Classification - Qualified as a Farm Improvement Contractor
CIC Classification - Qualified as a Commercial Improvement Contractor
